Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is a national organization responsible for setting and maintaining the standards for postgraduate medical education, for certifying specialist physicians and surgeons in Canada, and for promoting their continuing education.
AMS and the Royal College have had a longstanding relationship that began with a history of medicine program at the annual conference of the Royal College. Pioneered by late Dr. Peter Cruse, the program continued under the leadership of Dr. Peter Warren and is presently led by Dr. Dawna Gilchrist. The program now includes presentations by undergraduate medical students from across Canada as well as physicians attending the annual conference.
In 1984 AMS contributed $500,000 to the Royal College for a major initiative relating to societal needs and specialty education that was inspired by EFPO. An outcome of this effort is the landmark CanMEDS program of the Royal College.
The Royal College and AMS established the RCPSC/Donald Richards Wilson Award in honour of AMS Past-President Dr. Donald Wilson. The award is made to a leader of a team, program, or department who has demonstrated excellence in integrating the CanMEDS roles into a Royal College training program
